PMD Wet
The PMD Wet is a subsurface imitation of the Pale Morning Dun — one of the most important and widespread mayfly hatches in North American trout fishing. Tied as a soft hackle wet fly, it targets trout feeding on PMD nymphs and emergers in the water column and surface film, where the majority of feeding activity actually occurs during a hatch. Its pale, natural coloration and pulsing soft hackle collar deliver a convincing, lifelike profile that trout key on when PMDs are emerging, making it an essential pattern for any angler fishing spring creeks, tailwaters, or freestone streams during summer mornings.
Pattern Details
- Style: Soft hackle wet fly / mayfly emerger
- Imitates: Pale Morning Dun (PMD) nymph and emerger — one of the most prolific and important mayfly hatches in the West
- Hackle: Soft collar — pulsing, lifelike movement that breathes naturally in the current
- Coloration: Pale yellow / olive — closely matches the natural PMD profile in the water column
- Best water: Spring creeks, tailwaters, and freestone streams — most effective during PMD hatches from late spring through summer
- Target species: Trout
- Techniques: Swung across and downstream during the hatch; dead-drifted through runs and seams as a nymph; lifted at the end of the drift to imitate an ascending emerger
- Sizes available: 12, 14, 16
When PMDs are on the water and trout are locked into the hatch, the PMD Wet delivers where dry flies can't — a precise, subsurface emerger imitation that intercepts fish feeding just below the surface film.
