Partridge and Orange

The Partridge and Orange is one of the oldest and most enduring soft hackle wet flies in fly fishing — a pattern with roots in the north of England dating back centuries. Its simplicity is its strength: an orange silk body and a sparse partridge hackle that breathes and pulses with every movement of the current, imitating a wide range of emerging insects with uncanny effectiveness. Swung across and downstream or dead-drifted through the water column, it triggers strikes from trout that are feeding on caddis, mayfly, and midge emergers just below the surface.

Pattern Details

  • Style: Classic soft hackle wet fly / emerger imitation
  • Body: Orange — imitates the warm tones of caddis pupae and emerging mayflies
  • Hackle: Partridge — sparse, mottled fibers that breathe and pulse with lifelike movement in the current
  • Best water: Rivers, tailwaters, and freestone streams — riffles, runs, and pools during caddis and mayfly hatches
  • Target species: Trout
  • Techniques: Swung across and downstream on the hang; dead-drifted through the water column; effective as a dropper behind a dry fly during hatches
  • Sizes available: 12, 14

A centuries-old pattern that still outfishes modern flies when trout are keyed onto emerging insects — the Partridge and Orange is a soft hackle essential that belongs in every wet fly box.
