Parachute Hopper – The High-Vis Grasshopper Pattern for Summer Trout
The Parachute Hopper combines the irresistible silhouette of a grasshopper with the visibility advantage of a parachute post — making it one of the most practical and effective terrestrial patterns for summer dry fly fishing. When hoppers are on the water and you need to track your fly through broken current, this is the one to tie on.
Why It Works
- White parachute post provides exceptional visibility in choppy water, riffles, and glare — you’ll never lose sight of your fly
- Realistic hopper profile sits low and flush in the film, imitating a spent or struggling grasshopper
- Natural materials create a lifelike silhouette that fools selective, bank-feeding trout
- Parachute hackle keeps the fly riding upright and stable through fast runs and pocket water
When & Where to Fish It
Fish the Parachute Hopper from mid-summer through early fall along grassy banks, meadow streams, and agricultural rivers where hoppers are most active. Dead-drift it tight to the bank or through seams where trout are holding. The high-vis post makes it an excellent indicator fly when fishing a hopper-dropper rig with a nymph below.
